DMAX (film format)
DMAX is a motion picture large screen film format developed by the China Research Institute of Film Science & Technology and the China Film Group Corporation. It has been described as a competitor to IMAX and as laying the foundation for Chinese film projection technology using indigenous Chinese technology and intellectual property. DMAX was put into commercial use in 2012. Standard screen size is 20x12 meters which can be compared with IMAX screens which are at least 22x16 meters. According to Yang Xuepei, head of the Institute, 2D and 3D quality is as good as foreign brands. DMAX will have as many foreign moves as IMAX as well as indigenous Chinese movies. Price will be considerably less expensive than IMAX due to lower patent fees. At least 15 DMAX screens are planned to open this year in China.
